Course Description –Digital Photography 1 is an intensive course covering many aspects of modern photography. Students will learn to operate a digital camera, download image information, edit images and create unique products using Adobe Photoshop, formally present artwork, make informed aesthetic decisions, and evaluate their artistic progression. This course requires use of Adobe Photoshop, which is available on the class computers.
Objectives – Class objectives are based on the Utah Core Curriculum, which can be viewed at http://www.uen.org/ctecore/txFile.do?courseNum=500407&fname=BasicDigitalPhotography.pdf
Equipment and Materials – It is recommended that students have access to a Digital SLR camera. However, Digital Point and Shoot cameras can be used for most assignments in this course. No cellphone, iPod, or video cameras may be used. Lone Peak also has a limited number of digital cameras that can be checked out for a maximum of two days at a time, at which time students will be charged an additional fee of $1 per day.
Students must have a USB Thumbdrive (minimum 2GB) to store their images and projects on while working. Because of the limited number of class computers, students may not be able to use the same machine every day. Do not save any files onto the computer hard drives. Students may use their personal computers for projects, but must have Adobe Photoshop CS4 or newer. Lone Peak is not responsible for any theft or damage of personal property brought to school, including cameras or laptops. The classroom has memory card readers available, if students would rather not bring their cameras to school.
Students must also bring a pen/pencil and notebook to write lesson notes or to take quizzes.
The class has a $15 fee, which covers basic maintenance and use of computers, camera equipment and some photo printing. If a student excessively uses the equipment or wishes to use the school facilities for projects not related to the class, they will be charged for the extra cost. Students will also be held responsible for any costs for repairing and/or replacing any damaged class equipment.
Grades – Grading for the term will be based on the standard grading scale and is split between Projects, Assignments, and Quizzes. Extra credit may be available.

Projects:  Projects will be photos demonstrating a specific technique or style discussed in class. These photographs should be taken outside the class time, but there will be some opportunities to edit and finalize an image before they are due. Students must take all photographs individually. These will be graded on different standards for each assignment. Detailed instructions and rubrics will be provided.
Final Projects: The final project for the first term includes an 8x10 print of 3 photos taken during the class. Students choose their 3 best works, even if the image was used for a previous assignment. After selecting and printing the images, students must submit a 1-2 page paper, explaining how the images they have chosen reflect their expertise with the class material. The second term final project will be to print and matte another selection of works from the semester to demonstrate their mastery of digital photography.
In-class Assignments: These assignments will be small individual or group projects done in class throughout the term. Attendance and participation is essential to receive maximum points.
Quizzes: The quizzes will cover material discussed in the lessons or projects.
Assignment submission: Most projects and assignments will be turned in electronically. Assignments must be saved to the class USB Thumbdrive by the end of the period on the due date. When turning in any assignment that requires a digital file, make sure to give the file a specific name and save it in the proper image format. The file name structure includes --
(Class Period) – (Student Last Name) (Student First Name) – (Assignment).(file type)
i.e. B2 – Gibby Scott – Depth of Field.jpg
Due Dates:  Project deadlines will be given with the detailed instructions and rubrics, which will be passed out in class and available on the class website (http://lphsphoto.blogspot.com/). Assignments may be turned up until the last day of the term, but a 10% deduction of the total points possible occurs if assignments are submitted late. Quizzes may be made-up during the two class periods following the student's return to school. Make-up quizzes are more difficult than the originals (they are not multiple choice, for example). The responsibility for making up a quiz lies entirely with the student. The teacher will not seek out students missing quizzes.
Class Expectations –
The contents of the course allow for discussion and sharing of opinions. All students will show respect for each other and the teacher. While permitted during occasions that students are given time to work on individual projects, no cellphones or MP3 players will be allowed during class or group activities. Students will not be allowed to have food/drinks near the computers. Students may only enter the portrait studio, film darkroom, or supply room with permission from the teacher.
Photographs and assignments depicting obscene material will not be accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, scenes of extreme violence, nudity, tobacco/drug use, gang-related imagery, and vulgar/offensive gestures. Any violation will result in a zero for that assignment without the option to make-up or repeat the work, and possible conferences with parents and/or administration.
School equipment is very limited. If a student is using the computers or other equipment for anything other than the assigned projects (checking email, homework for other classes, personal projects, etc.) they will lose possible grade points and/or be removed from the computers.
